The Montana PIRC (with partial funding from the Montana Department of Health and Human Services, ECCS) has developed a curriculum and training program (Parents As Leaders, PALS) to encourage and support Montana parents as leaders in their schools and communities. This program is designed for parents to develop their voices and vision to advocate on behalf of their children.
Parent participants will:
Examine their own strengths, beliefs and biases as a parent
Learn about their child's learning strengths and styles, and how best to help advocate for them in the school environment
Implement stress management strategies, heart-center listening and compassionate communication to empower all family members
Practice and share emotional self-management skills learned in sessions to develop confidence for participation in the community
Develop a greater understanding of social-emotional development
Envision, plan and implement changes they want to make at home, in schools and in their community

"I was able to imagine strategies using these techniques - personally and professionally - with all ages, to encourage stress reduction and understanding of the inner processes that can either 'trip us up' or help us find a path through."
"One new thing I hadn't considered before today was how I can take an affirmation and really begin feeling what these words can be and how intentions can be a possibility."
"I now have words to use when I need to convice people the importance of emotional health: 'Our world needs these connections - our young parents without adequate parenting skill will benefit greatly'."
